Phone Speaker Full of Water? Try Sound Before Opening It ¶
Water usually gets into a phone speaker after rain, a swim, or a splash in the sink. The sound turns muffled or quiet, and the first instinct is to open the phone or poke the grille. Both are a bad idea. Opening the phone can void the warranty, and poking the grille pushes water deeper or damages the mesh.
Try sound first ¶
A water-eject tone plays a low-frequency sound that vibrates the speaker and pushes water droplets out of the grille. It takes about a minute:
- Turn the volume up and hold the phone with the speaker facing down.
- Play a water-eject tone for 30 to 60 seconds.
- Wipe the grille gently with a dry cloth.
- Let the phone air-dry, then test the sound.
If it still sounds muffled, repeat once. Two runs are usually enough for a splash. A phone that went fully underwater needs more drying time.
What not to do ¶
- Do not use a hair dryer on hot. Heat can damage the battery and the speaker glue.
- Do not poke the speaker grille with a pin or a toothpick.
- Do not put the phone in rice. Rice does not pull water out of a sealed speaker, and dust gets in.
