Ableton Live 12.1 Release Notes ¶
Release Date: April 15, 2026
Version: 12.1.0
Supported Systems: macOS 13 or later, Windows 10 or later
Overview ¶
Live 12.1 introduces a set of long-requested workflow improvements focused on project portability, real-time collaboration, and hardware integration. This release addresses common pain points around file management when moving projects between machines, expands creative collaboration capabilities, and significantly reduces the friction of setting up audio and MIDI hardware for new and existing users.
New Features ¶
Project Version History ¶
Live 12.1 introduces Project Version History, a built-in change tracking system that automatically saves incremental snapshots of your project as you work. You can now browse a full timeline of your session and restore any previous state with a single click — without overwriting your current work.
What's new:
- Automatic snapshots are created every 30 minutes during an active session and on every manual save
- The Version History panel is accessible via File > Version History and displays a timestamped list of all saved states
- Each snapshot entry supports a custom label so you can annotate significant moments in your creative process — for example, "Before arrangement changes" or "Original mix"
- Restoring a previous version opens it as a new project tab, leaving your current session untouched
- Version history is stored locally within the project folder and does not require a cloud connection
Why it matters: Producers frequently make destructive edits that are difficult to undo through standard Ctrl+Z history. Version History provides a reliable safety net for longer sessions where significant changes accumulate over time.
Pack and Go — Project Transfer Tool ¶
Moving a Live project between machines has historically required manual consolidation of samples, plugins, and presets — a process prone to missing files and broken paths. Pack and Go solves this with a single export action that bundles everything your project needs into one portable folder.
What's new:
- Pack and Go is available via File > Pack and Go and collects all project dependencies including audio samples, clips, recorded audio, and custom presets
- A pre-export dependency scan identifies any missing files before packaging and prompts you to locate or replace them
- Export options allow you to choose between a full bundle for complete portability or a lightweight bundle that excludes factory content already installed on the destination machine
- The resulting folder structure is clean and self-contained — open the .als file inside and Live resolves all paths automatically regardless of where the folder is saved on the destination machine
Why it matters: Transferring projects between a studio desktop and a laptop is one of the most common workflows for working producers. Pack and Go eliminates the broken sample problem entirely.
Live Collaboration Mode (Beta) ¶
Live 12.1 introduces the first version of Live Collaboration Mode, allowing two or more users to work on the same project simultaneously over a network connection. This feature is currently in beta and available to all Live 12 Suite users.
What's new:
- The session owner shares a collaboration link via the new Share panel, accessible from the top menu bar
- Collaborators join via the link and are assigned a color-coded cursor visible to all participants in the Session and Arrangement views
- Track editing, clip launching, device parameter changes, and mixer adjustments are synced in real time across all connected users
- A built-in conflict resolution system handles simultaneous edits to the same parameter by prioritizing the most recent change and notifying all users
- An integrated text chat panel allows collaborators to communicate without leaving Live
- Collaboration sessions are end-to-end encrypted and do not require project files to be stored on any third-party server
Known limitations in beta:
- Maximum of 4 simultaneous collaborators per session
- Audio recording to shared tracks is not yet supported in collaboration mode
- Plugin state sync for third-party VST/AU plugins is not guaranteed across machines with different plugin versions installed
Why it matters: Remote collaboration has become a standard part of modern music production workflows. Live Collaboration Mode brings real-time co-production into Live natively, without requiring workarounds like shared Dropbox folders or session file exchanges.
Simplified Audio Device Setup ¶
First-time audio interface configuration in Live has been simplified significantly. The new Audio Setup Assistant guides you through device selection, buffer size, and input/output routing in a step-by-step flow that replaces the previous flat Preferences panel.
What's new:
- On first launch after installation or when a new audio interface is detected, Live automatically opens the Audio Setup Assistant
- The assistant detects connected audio interfaces and displays them in plain language — for example, "Focusrite Scarlett 2i2" rather than raw driver identifiers
- Recommended buffer size settings are suggested based on your detected hardware and system specifications, with plain explanations of the latency tradeoff at each setting
- Input and output routing is configured through a visual patch bay interface showing your physical hardware connections mapped to Live's inputs and outputs
- The Audio Setup Assistant is accessible at any time via Help > Audio Setup Assistant and can be re-run whenever your hardware configuration changes
Why it matters: Audio interface setup has been a consistent friction point for new Live users. The Assistant reduces setup time and eliminates the need to consult external guides for basic hardware configuration.
Improved MIDI Controller Plug and Play ¶
MIDI controller detection and mapping in Live 12.1 has been overhauled to reduce setup time and improve out-of-the-box compatibility with a wider range of hardware.
What's new:
- Live now automatically detects class-compliant MIDI controllers on connection and applies a default mapping profile where one is available
- A new MIDI Controller Library includes pre-built mapping profiles for over 300 popular controllers including Akai, Arturia, Native Instruments, Novation, and Roland devices
- When no pre-built profile exists, Live's Instant Mapping system has been improved to make smarter default assignments based on controller layout — placing transport controls, volume faders, and performance pads in contextually appropriate locations
- The MIDI Mapping browser now includes a search function so you can quickly locate and edit any mapped parameter by name
- Hot-swapping controllers mid-session is now fully supported — disconnect and reconnect a controller without restarting Live or losing your mapping configuration
Why it matters: Setting up a MIDI controller in previous versions of Live often required significant manual mapping work. The expanded controller library and improved auto-detection bring Live closer to a true plug and play experience for hardware users.
Bug Fixes ¶
- Fixed an issue where audio clips in the Arrangement View would occasionally shift position after undoing a warp marker edit
- Resolved a crash that occurred when loading projects containing more than 64 return tracks on Apple Silicon machines
- Fixed incorrect tempo detection on imported audio files with embedded BPM metadata that differed from the project tempo
- Resolved an issue where MIDI notes would occasionally sustain indefinitely after a Live set was stopped and restarted mid-performance
- Fixed a display issue in the Mixer View where track volume meters failed to reset to zero after playback stopped
- Resolved a memory leak that caused increased RAM usage over extended sessions when using Max for Live devices with audio rate signals
Known Issues ¶
- Live Collaboration Mode is in beta and may exhibit instability during sessions longer than 4 hours. We recommend saving frequently during extended collaborative sessions.
- The Audio Setup Assistant does not currently support Thunderbolt audio interfaces on Windows. These devices should be configured manually through Preferences > Audio.
- Pack and Go does not include Rack presets saved to the User Library. These should be exported separately via the User Library export function.
